With plein air painting, I often see artists confused about what to focus on outdoors. Some truly don't know where to begin painting something in front of them. What plein air painting is about, is relating your feelings about the scene, and not about copying nature. I have seen artists walk around endlessly looking for subject. A much more dramatic way to paint is to look for 'light'. An ordinary object in a wondrous light becomes extraordinary ! And when you have excitement starting your painting, you can more easily carry that through to the finished piece, instead of deciding at the finishing what you can do to make the painting more exciting.
