Artist Statement

“While it’s important to look ahead and plan for the future, an artist must also remain
“in the moment…the now.”
I’ve been an artist all my life.  Drawing with pencil and crayon as a child, I don’t remember learning the skill…the ability has just always been there   I have a broad interest for subject matter but I’m drawn to architecture in the landscape, with preference to painting on location at every opportunity.  Painting “En Plein air” (a French phrase meaning “in the open air”) with watercolor requires strong technical skills and a large measure of intestinal fortitude. Mindful of weather and light conditions, the challenge is to capture light, shadows, and shapes as the sun moves, moment by moment, across the sky. Every stroke must be without hesitation. It’s a marathon race with the sun...spirited, emotional...and exhausting. I love it.”

A native Texan, Tina Bohlman has used the state in which she was raised as both the inspiration and the canvas for her art.  Mostly a self-taught artist, Bohlman works in both watercolor and oil medium to create her breathtaking plein air paintings and brilliant rural landscapes.  She cultivated her natural artistic talent and her eye for beauty with great dedication and an insatiable desire to learn the techniques and history of the art.  Bohlman has supplemented her independent study with workshops conducted by some of the best artists in the field, including Jan Kuntz, Tom Lynch, Jill Carver and the late Irving Shapiro (d.1994). She prefers plein air rather than working in the studio and is a veteran of numerous competition plein air and “quick draw” events including, Plein Air Southwest–Outdoor Painters Society, Sedona Plein Air Festival-Sedona, Arizona, Paint The Parks-Estes Park, Colorado, En Plein Air Texas-San Angelo, TX and Plein Air Easton MD.

Her dedication combined with a lifetime of experience, Bohlman has made quite an impact in her field.  After receiving her first award at the beginning of her career in 1972, she has since earned more than 60 awards, including more than a dozen First Place and 6 Best in Show titles.  Her work is collected worldwide; Bohlman originals hang in private and corporate collections in 34 States, Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, Portugal, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Republic of Benin, West Africa.
